Superhot - Time only moves when you waste it

by Cloud

Hi guys, it's been a while since we last posted anything, huh? And I think this is not the first time you hear that from us, sadly our posting rhythm has decreased a lot since we're all studying or working on lots of other projects, but we'll try to do our best to not abandon the blog and keep making funny articles for you to read.

Enough talking about our personal stuff, now let's talk about today's game: Superhot. You've probably already heard of it, and probably you hate it because it seems some annoying, noisy, popular youtuber has make videos about it, but let's talk about what it has to offer us as players.

The primary appeal of Superhot is it's basic concept: you have an FPS where time moves only while you do. So basically, enemies shoot, and you have time to think about how to dodge them and deliver your bullets to their monochromatic faces. This makes it more of a puzzle/strategy game than a common FPS, in the fashion of games like Portal. Levels from the main story mode are cool enough to make good use of the concept. While it only takes about 3 hours to clear them if you're skilled enough, there's an an "endless mode", where you see how long can you survive to an endless stream of enemies, and a "challenge mode", where you complete story levels with additional requirements, that should satisfy your needs for more gameplay hours (if you have any, I personally didn't dig too much into those modes because I hadn't so much spare time... sad me).

Similarities with Portal don't end with gameplay: the whole athmosphere and visual design are a lot influenced by Valve's game's minimalistic choices. Characters and items are very simple in their shapes, but lighting effects and the animations and noises when they break suggest that they are all made of a glass-like material, and that makes them look cooler. Furthermore, everything is basically made with 3 colors: black for the player and the items he can interact with, red for the enemies and white for the environment. Simple but functional. The overall graphical result is quite pleasing, proving a smart design.

Even the game's setting and irony are pretty cool in their metanarrative fashion, but I'm not gonna spoiler anything because it's cool to discover it yourself. Just know that you start the game chatting with another guy in a DOS shell, and he sends you a pirated version of this game.

So, is this game worth your time? Sure, it's a very original and cool experience, like you don't see everyday, and it's not bad once in a while to try something different. Indie games scene is full of wannabes who're gonna claim that their game is revolutionary/innovative/alternative/*insert poser term here*, but this is one of the rare cases in which it's truly something fresh.

TL;DR You definitely have to check out this game. It's the most innovative shooter I've played in years!
